The Soap Box Derby is coming up this Saturday and I’m looking for amateur radio help again this year.
My apologies for the short notice, but I’ve been extremely busy lately and haven’t had time to sit down and write this out.
The race will be held on Grant Street hill in front of West Lafayette Junior/Senior High School. We provide support for the race by assisting them get the cars get placed in the right order and in the correct lanes. As the race progresses, we let the car handlers at the bottom of the hill know which cars need to be returned to the top of the hill and which have been eliminated from the racing. We have done this for several years and the Lafayette Soap Box Derby has always appreciated our help.
It usually takes four or five people to help out. If you can help all day, or just half the day, please let me know. It can get hot out there, so having a couple extra people allows for some breaks and moving around a bit. All you need is a hand-held radio and the desire to help out - if you don’t have a radio, I have a couple to lend for the occassion.
The race usually starts around 9:00 and runs through mid-afternoon. I’ve been told that there may be fewer drivers this year so the race may take less time than usual. Because there are fewer drivers, they may do their practice before the race which might delay the start, but, I’d still plan on being there around 8:30-8:45.
Please let me know if you can help. If you have any questions, I’ll try to answer them. Once I have a list of volunteers and I receive more information about the race, I’ll send out addtional mail to those volunteers.
Thanks to everyone who has helped in the past and I hope we can provide valuable assist for the race again this year.
